Rajeev Gandhi Khel Ratna was first introduced in 1991. The award was named after the late Rajeev Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India. “Khel Ratna” means a ‘Sports Gem’. The first athlete to receive the award was India’s chess grandmaster, Vishwanathan Anand.

However, it is only awarded to excellent Indian athletes in various sports activities. The award’s name was again revised in 2021 to Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna. It has a medal ceremony and up to 25 lakh rupees in prize money. The award is provided annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. 

The Selection Process 

Any National Sports Federation that has been recognised by the Indian government is eligible to nominate people. There is a limit of 2 nominations for each sports discipline. These nominations are accepted till the last working day of April.

The selection criteria for the Rajeev Gandhi Khel Ratna Award are simple but extremely strict. It depends on the athletes’ performance in the National and International events. Primarily, the focus remains on the International achievements of the past 4 years. The government then appoints a 12-person committee. The purpose of this committee is to analyse the achievements of the nominees in an unbiased manner.

Neeraj Chopra

Often referred to as ‘The Golden Boy”, he is one of the most successful Indian sportsperson. Neeraj Chopra has represented our country in Javelin throw in multiple international events.
